WhatsApp has always emphasized putting user safety first. In recent months, the company has introduced several new features aimed at enhancing user security, with one notable addition being passkeys. When it comes to chatting with friends and family on apps like WhatsApp, keeping our conversations private is crucial. The introduction of passkeys is expected to bolster conversation security by simplifying and enhancing the account verification process. Let’s delve into what this means for users.
Passkeys Now Available for All WhatsApp Users
The passkey feature, which was initially rolled out to Android users six months ago, has finally made its way to iOS. Initially, only a select group of beta testers had access to this feature, but now, according to a report from WA Beta Info, all iOS users can take advantage of passkeys. The latest WhatsApp update (version 24.9.78) is now available on the App Store and includes the passkey feature, along with additional updates such as audio support for screen sharing during video calls and a refreshed interface featuring updated icons and illustrations.
What are passkeys?
Passkey verification offers users multiple authentication options, including facial recognition, biometrics, or a PIN stored on Apple’s passkey manager. This variety not only enhances convenience but also provides robust protection against unauthorized access. With passkeys, iOS users can log into their WhatsApp accounts without needing a traditional password or relying on two-factor authentication via SMS. Even when offline, users can log in using their passkey, as the authentication key is stored securely on their device.
Once set up, the passkey is securely stored in the iCloud Keychain, allowing users to access WhatsApp using their device passcode or biometric authentication instead of a conventional 6-digit code. To access this feature, iOS users simply need to update their WhatsApp app from the App Store. Keep in mind that these updates may take some time to reach all users, so be sure to periodically check the App Store if you don’t see the option to update.
How to enable passkeys
Enabling passkeys is a straightforward process. First, ensure that your WhatsApp is updated to the latest version via the App Store. Once updated, navigate to Settings, click on Account, and look for the Passkeys option. From there, you can toggle the feature on and enjoy added security for your WhatsApp conversations.
